Pre-K Day 24

Wow!!! What a fun, energetic, crazy ride it has been.

We have read, written, talked, checked out books and made many wonderful new friends.

This past week was a week full of new technology. We went to the computer lab on Tuesday morning and worked on improving our mouse control skills, and using the keyboard. On Wednesday we had time to explore the app's on the iTouches, we also had to work on sharing. On Thursday, we used the Netbooks and learned a new program called Odyssey and learned how to use a built in mouse on the computer. Very challenging, but we where successful!! Friday was a day to use the activboard for the first time. It was a fun time.

As you can see our education will not only be reading, writing and arithmatic but technology on a daily basis. Time to learn and be challenged.

A Great week, exciting and challenging but very beneficial.

Tool #11 Reflection

1. What are your favorite tools you now have in your personal technology toolbox?
One of the best tools for myself is finding online resources and using them in the classroom including video and games. This is a new aspect that will make my job easier and not make me have to create everything I want to use in the class. I also want to model the use of GoAnimate, MakeBeliefsComix and TikaTok.

2. How have you transformed your thinking about the learning that will take place in your classroom?
The journey has surely changed my thinking and how Pre-K children can use the tools and be prepared for future learning. They will become digital citizens and have many resources under their belts to use for many years.

How has your vision for your classroom changed?
I have begun to create a new plan and organization for my classroom to make the tools more accessable.

3. Were there any unexpected outcomes from this program that surprised you?
The greatest outcome was that I found I was able to navigate new programs and will be able to use them independenty and teach them to my students.

Tool #10 - Underneath it All - Digital Citizenship

Digital Citizenship could be a difficult concept for my Pre-K children to comprehend;however, becoming a member at such a young age it is important to make sure children understand the responsibility of being a digital citizen.

Several items to communiate would be to "Be Kind" online, just as they have to be in person. Students must understand to remain "Safe" and know that they don't give out any personal information such as name, address, school name, phone #, etc. Finally, the students understand not to set up passwords or navigate to sites that have not been approved by the teacher while working at school.

NetSmartzKids is a site that I thought would make learning about internet safety more enjoyable for Pre-K children. I also thought BrainPop would be a valuable resource that will give the students good resources.

Tool #9 Incorporating Classroom-Based Devices as Tools for Learning

I believe by maintaining the objectives of TLW learn to recoginze letter names in context or TLW distinguish letters from numerals the student will be able to use several of the games from the sites above to assist them in reteaching and reinforcing classroom instruction. The technology will be a wonderful new tool for the students to solidify learning and be able to have independent practice.

Tool #8 Looking at the Tools

I will be receiving 3 Netbooks and 5 iTouches for my classroom and I am very excited about giving my students exposure to both of the tools.

With the 3 Netbooks, I believe it will give students the opportunity to explore different programs and items in Google Docs. This tool will give my PK children an opportunity to practice with keyboarding, learning letters and about how to use parts of the keyboard- space bar, enter, delete, backspace, tab, caps lock, etc. I think by allowing them to explore at an early age this can remove some of the confusion when they are in older grades. The newest and most difficult to use will be the webcam, but after the initial instruction it should become easiar and more productive.

With the 5 iTouches, I will be very deliberate with the apps that I load to make sure they are all grade level appropriate, I will also load recorded books that are useful for my students.

To manage the iTouches in the classroom my plan is to divide the students into groups of 5 and give each group 15 uninterupted minutes everyday to work on apps that will help them learn specific skills.

The NetBooks I am planning on giving each student 10 independent minutes and rotate through the whole class over two days.

I am very excited about the tools that I will have in the class. Thank you Spring Branch for providing the tools for the students.

Tool #7 Going Global

Many of the tools explored seem to be rather advanced for Pre-K children and very labor intensive for the classroom teacher. GlobalSchoolNet and Class2Class-math projects seem to be outdated and if anything is recreated they would need to be PK specific.

The tool that I believe to be most usable to get us out of the classroom is to create and then invite participants to Skype. Most likely PK/K teachers in the district and in other districts, possibly a PK center in Aldine.

It is very exciting to help the students to the experience of going global and flattening the walls to the classroom.

Share your thoughts on how you see the tools being integrated into your classroom. How do you see them encouraging participation?

I saw many of the tools as to difficult for Pre-K children to use, but I think they can be exposed to Voxipop in the classroom with each of them recording a response to a question. If parents are able this could be used for students to record from home on a given homework assignment.

The tool I found most beneficial was Skype for teachers. I found it very interesting to possibly share a project or response from another classroom from somewhere in the world. One project I found was classes sharing a performance of a play. One class could learn a play, make costumes and perform for the partner class. Then you reverse the project.

Describe for your readers how you think each tool can be incorporated into your classroom - how you could see the tool being used by you instructionally and your students to demonstrate their understanding of a concept or topic in your classroom.

The first tool I used was very familiar (Wordle) and I believe it will be very useful for my students. Especially after they have learned sight words and letters and are able to do something independently. At first I will use it whole class for experience and modeling.

Also, MakeBeliefComix will allow students to beging to understand character, setting, dialogue while playing with the characters and using immagination for writing. Again, it will be necessary to model for my students.

Other tools I used where Animoto to create movies of the students or field trips and TikaTok.

Many new tools that will give the students more tools to use that they can continue to use in later years.

Tool #4 Moving to the clouds

Google Docs is a tools that helps to create many short cuts to creating documents, recreating and sharing the all the people involved.

While exploring the tools I did several different things including creating a Document and then sending it to the person who needs to give input into its' content. It was a much easier process then having to create, save, open an email, insert the document and wait for a reply to make the corrections. I like the ability to collaborate.

I also used the Google calendar and sent new calendar appointments to other persons who are outside of the SBISD system. It allows me to reach a broader spectrom of persons. I think I will use the Google calendar for my PK parents next year for classroom reminders, and I will also have my room mom add PTA dates and volunteers to our calendar.

The other tools I explored and will use with my students are Sites to create a PK class website and Groups to facilitate class discussion with parents about classroom volunteering, field trips, reading, etc.

Are their other tools that teachers have used that are easy to modify for younger students?

I liked looking speciffically at other Pre-K sites, because they all provided resources that could be incorporated into the current Pre-K curriculum.

Leaving my comment on someones' blog is a good experience. I liked seeing what others had done and also the way that others are thinking about the use of technolgy in the classroom. This really is an open path that needs to be explored and looked at indepth to determine what you can add to your own class and give your students additional resources to use in their education.

A New Beginning 2010-2011

We have learned names of our friends! Then we sang songs, have you heard, "Hey My name is Joe?" you should ask your son or daughter to sing for you. We also went on a "Bear Hunt" it was GREAT!!!

We have been reading new books and have made several new friends including, David who's mom always told him No! and Bertie, who has some really GROSS habits, ask your kids about his eewy habits!

We have been learning to sequence events and character of a story, we (they) are AMAZING when it comes to Brown Bear.

We have had a few discussions about authors and illustrators and we have written in our journals and showed off our own skills as authors and illustrators.

Don't forget SHOW-and-TELL is every Friday!

Times are changing!

Your students are changing and growing by leaps and bounds.

We have been having fun with a unit of study this month focused on Seasons and Weather. They seem to really love to talk about Snow. Maybe because we have a four foot igloo in our classroom that they enjoy playing in daily.

Ask your student to show you some of the new sight words in books and magazines they may have at home. The are learning many new words and are able to read and write these words.

The next time you are at school welcome new students Mason and Amilah to our class. We now how 21 students are enjoying working together.

3. homework backpacks coming back the beginning of February.

Reflections!

This week has been a very short week at school, but one that was full of fun and learning and of course your week is never complete without a field trip. Thank you to the parents who went on the field trip and helped to keep the children safe as we walked down Memorial and assisted them in selecting the pumpkins. They had lots of fun finding their own pumpkins!

We are looking forward to seeing everyone next week. Take care of yourselves and remain healthy.

An Exciting Week Ahead!

What a GREAT week we had last week with the Fall Festival at the end of the week. I think everyone had FUN!!

Don't forget we go to the library Monday morning and everyone needs to bring library books back.

Monday will also hold other first including everyone will checking out a book from the classroom library and all students will receive a homework backpack that they will keep and return on Friday along with the book checked out from the classroom. Please spend 20-30 minutes per night on homework, including reading.

Please help your child gain independence by:
1. reminding them to put folders in their backbacks,
2. letting them walk to the classroom alone in the morning, and
3. reminding them of library books.

Thank you all for the help you have given us in the classroom. We NEVER could manage computer lab time without parent volunteers. Also thenks to those who have come and read to the students they love having you come.

If anyone has time in the next two weeks, I will need someone to make some diecuts, some to cut out lamination and copies that need to be made. Please let me know when and if you can come and I will have everything ready.

Great Beginnings!

Pre-K is off to a GREAT year!

The students have learned expectations for classroom behavior and routines for work. We have learned how to use each of the learning centers and will begin using painting center, rice table and art center this next week.

Remember to bring library books on Tuesday because we will go to the library on Tuesday morning.

Some of what we have worked on beyond routines are letter/sound association, sight words, listening comprehension and following directions. Students also LOVE music time, we have been working on steady beat while playing the drum and other instruments. We like singing songs like "I Like Me" "Brown Bear" and so many more.

Your children have been fun in class and we enjoy seeing them everyday. Thank you for bringing your children to school everyday.

Don't forget to send family collages by September 11th.

The schedule below is sort of what we do. If we have a teachable moment that pops us, I go with it. I use this schedule most days so that we can have some consistency, but we just go with the flow and have lots of fun.

Parents:
1. register to be a classroom volunteer,
2. we need volunteers to read to the class, computer lab time, literacy centers, math tubs and writing/reading workshop.

Schedule:

7:45-8:10 Organization(put away folders, backpacks, lunches, sign-in)
Independent silent (ha! ha!) reading

8:10-9:10 Circle Time (calendar, music, shared reading/ writing, read aloud)
9:10-9:25 Journals

A GREAT 1st week!!

We have had a WONDERFUL week getting to know one another!! We have been singing, playing, reading,writing and laughing with one another. We have begun to form a community of learners that will make progress this year and love to learn.

So far, we have 100% attendance. Keep up the good work and I will see you all next week.

In your child's backpack you have a large paper hand with a note attached, please read it carefully. Leave your post here for next week.

Two things I left off the note are:
1. We will have Show & Tell every Friday, and
2. We need every family to contirbute 1 snack that feeds 22 for the month of September.
(animal crackers, goldfish, cheese crackers, fresh fruit, etc. - NO NUTS!!!)

What a Day!!

Today is our second day of Pre-K and everyone came back for another day of fun!!

Today we wrote in our journals, sang new songs, read some of our already favorite books and just had a GREAT time together.

Ask your child about red feathers and about the characters in the book. We had fun coloring, cutting and making a general all around mess. That's what Pre-K is ALL about.

Please check your child's folder for important papers tonight.

First Day NEWS!

What a wonderful day!! The boys and girls, all 18 had a marvelous day. We spent time getting acquainted by learning one anothers names and learning some of the basic classroom rules and expectations.

The students loved writing at journal time on self selected topics and did a wonderful job of creating a class graph of "Who Brought Lunch from Home". We wrote our names and read several books. We read Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See? and Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.

After a long day, it was time to head for home.

This is a great way to organize all of the bookmarks. It is going to be such a great way to keep organized and keep from loosing all of the bookmarks that I want to keep.

Also a great teacher tool to organize bookmarks for student use by theme, category, etc. You know we are all always searching and finding new sites and then when the kids need them we say now "Where did I find that site?"

WOW! What a great way to keep all of my personal school books organized! It is also going to allow me to organize by unit, theme, time of year that I use specific books and which skills I focus on for that skill.

These are so much fun! My PreK students are going to love adding text. This is one of the best tools I have seen for teaching dialogue and helping them have fun at the same time.

Fun and Learning?! Who would have thought that could happen! I'm know as a SARCASM master!

News feeds and searching for other blogs helped make research much easier.

The one's I found most useful and gave me the best results are Technorati and Atomic Learning. I was able to find new information that helps support imaginative play in Early Childhood classrooms and not just academics.

Google reader is going to be a great tool to help keep me organized in the classroom. Once we can get back into our e-mail I am going to add my Outlook calendar, I think it will send daily updates to my google reader and it will let me know when others add things to my already busy life.

As for home it might help keep me up and knowing where all of my children are and what they are doing.

How to use it in the Library I don't have a clue, I'm not a librarian and my school doesn't have a library.

I didn't know Google had that much to offer.

I have selected Google alerts to keep me updated on areas that I am interested in. OK, it is nothing educational--I get update everytime something happens with the Houston Astros!
Go 'STROS!!

I have also created a Google Notebook that I am using to help me find current research on Play in the Early Childhood classroom.

mashups, picassa, mosaics are so much fun.

I see so many ways I can use these programs to create teaching tools to use in different units with my students. I think I can create tools in the programs with my students either individually, whole or small group. The possibilites are limitless!

My goal now is to think through how to sequence each of the new tools and how to introduce them to my four-year-olds. After I have that plan in place then I will try to figure out how to manage this with only two computers, no computer lab and 22 students.

I am learning so much!

I love using Flicker and all of the pictures. I have found something for every unit that I teach in PreK. My only problem now is that I am having problems loading the pictures into an Animoto. I guess I will be able to do that later.

I selected this image to post because one of the files of pictures that I have downloaded is all about fire fighters. It is a big unit for PreK children. Flicker has made my searching so much easier.

WOW! I did it! I feel like such a kid learning something new. It took me a while to get the BLOG set up and then I had to go back and create the AVATAR! That was fun! All I know now is that I did it and I can see so many ways I can use the new technology with my PreK students. It is going to make a difference in what I have in my toolbox to use in the fall.

If PreK can do, it anyone can!

Seven new habits? Oh my! I already have enough habits that the Library Lion would like me to get rid of, but here are seven new one. YEAH!

As I review the list of the 7 Habits I think that the most difficult one for me will be to create my own learning toolbox. My toolbox for technology.

I am a life long learner and always try to see what I can learn from each new situation and from my students. Teaching and mentoring others has been a goal for me so that I can help to improve our profession and help others see that we teach not because we couldn't do anything else but because there is value and knowledge in education.

The easiest of the 7 habits is PLAY! After all I teach PreK and we play ALL day. We don't whistle while we work and play but we are always learning.

The title of this whole project 23 things to PLAY! What a fun way to learn, by PLAYING!
